Green Electricity Marketplace

About Green Electricity Marketplace

GEM was formed in 2000 by Dr John Green and Graham Stein, both having previously worked on energy issues for Friends of the Earth Scotland.

With the liberalisation of the UK electricity market and the growth in renewable energy it was felt that a website which could list and analyse available green tariffs would encourage uptake of these tariffs and help to promote renewable energy.

GEM is one of the leading switching websites for green electricity tariffs, and unlike most other switching sites it is not just part of a general switching site, and as a specialist in renewable energy provides its own perspective on green tariffs.

The website is widely recognised for the information it provides: by environment groups including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth; by consumer groups including the National Consumer Council; and by the media including BBC Newsnight and The Independent.

Fees
GEM provides online sign-up for some tariffs in return for a referral fee from those companies. This does not affect our assessment of tariffs or our recommendations, but we do make a special effort to have sign-up arrangements with the tariffs that we consider are the best available.

GEM’s Privacy policy
Green Electricity Marketplace Ltd (GEM) is registered under the Data Protection Act. Personal information submitted to GEM as part of the sign-up process will not be used by us for any other purpose. It will not be passed by us to any third party other than the electricity company selected.
